A Short Course in Recognition Programs

A basic fact of life: when a person's activity is rewarded they will be more apt to repeat it.

If you want people to respond in a positive way, recognize their efforts. This applies to a client's loyalty, an employee's safety record, or a donor's gift.

A Case Study
One of our clients is the local franchisee of a major beverage supplier. Their territory covers parts of Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. Three recognition programs have been set up to support identified needs.

1. A Sales Center Program
features an annual recognition to the individual units that meet their sales goals. Each receives a wall plaque. In addition there is a "traveling" trophy that is awarded to the sales center achieving the highest margin over goal. That center keeps the crystal trophy on display for a year. An additional part of the recognition is a crystal name plate given to the Sales Center Manager. It features an image of the "traveling" trophy as a constant reminder to the manager of his/her achievement.

2. Safety
A second recognition works to lower losses and insurance cost relating to driver safety. As part of a national emphasis there is an annual driver's rodeo. On the local level we work together to make this a significant family event. The driver gets recognition and his family is invited to an all day event. An incentive item is distributed to "announce" the event; tee shirts and flashlights are two that have been used. At the event, gifts are given to the families that have a safety theme. The young children especially enjoy the bottles of bubble "stuff". They also have a safety theme reminding them to be safe on the playground. Winners receive a plaque as well as an apparel item to wear at regional and national competition. Our client finds this program helpful in reducing risk and costs.

3. Job Fair Incentives
To make client's efforts "stand out", a group of imprinted items were selected to call attention to career opportunities. Two items that have gotten attention are a puzzle (Message: "Your Career A Puzzle? Put the Pieces Together at ________") and some neon emery boards (Message: "Brighten Your Career Plans at __________").
